Self Publishing Behind the Scenes means of a lot of work and shared ideas. One of the things I love about self publishing is the freedom to to create from cover to cover.
The front of the book, the cover, is the readers’ first look, a teaser of what the book is about. It also sets the tone of the story. At the moment, I work in four different genres. Each has a feel to it, an integrity to it that I strive to keep fresh while attempting to make sure that the message conveyed is true to the story. With that in mind, I and my graphics designer, Jolene meet when I am close to finishing the first draft.
The first order of business is to find and collect the elements needed for the cover art. We have tried a number of methods for sharing ideas through the years. The one that works the best for us is a face to face meeting with me zipping through the two sites we have found that provide the most images that work for us. Since I have been living with these people for months in this case, I have them firmly in my mind. It takes seconds for an image to click or to bomb. Jolene says it really saves her time in searching for just the right couple in the case of Hidden Fire Book Six of the Live Oak Series.
Once the images are chosen, Jolene adds the layers that tie the current to book to the theme established with the first book in each series. This meeting provided an unexpected benefit. We actually did the element search for three different book covers in three different genres. Was that ever fun. Really!
We knocked out all three in under an hour!
While I was looking and tossing more than I chose, we also realized that the cover would be completed prior to finishing the final draft which meant no mock up for pre publication promotion. An added bonus and another huge time saver. Right now, we are using a mock up for the pre promotion of Hidden Fire Book Six of the Live Oak Series. Hopefully, I’ll have the real cover in a few days.
