Celebrating the Fourth of July on the farm is always special. It isn’t just about fireworks and picnics. Hot summer nights with blazing colors on a black sky or who can eat the most hot dogs. Chores have to done as the animals depend on us. We are dealing with near triple digit heat here. New fruit trees and the vegetable gardens need extra watering daily to thrive.
I started today this way. I am ending it with a photo of the flag that flies in my front yard, no matter where I happen to be living at the time. The stainless flag pole is a gift from my father. He was a World War II veteran, a Marine in the assault third wave on Iwo Jima. The base that holds it safe even in tornados and hurricanes is a gift from my husband, a Navy hospital corpsman in the Viet Nam War. When a tornado touched down about a quarter of a mile away from the farm a few years ago, the pole no longer stood straight.
Upset at the damage to something that was so important to my family and to me, I searched for a solution for all of an hour. I was so new in the county that I didn’t know anyone to repair it. My husband and father were gone by then and there was just me. I wasn’t prepared to let the flag fly on a damaged pole and, equally, it wasn’t coming down. So, I got in my golf cart with the bull bars on the front and whacked the metal until it stood straight again.
Every time I look at my pole and my flag, I remember that morning. These colors don’t run and this flag flies no matter what challenges this country is facing. I am not the only one who shows their colors and believes in this country. So on this July Fourth, we celebrate our independence and our resilience no matter what the odds.
I wish everyone a wonderful Fourth of July. Together we can do anything if we try.
